THE ORIGIN AND HERITAGE OF THE ACADEMY

The Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry was established in 2002, under the name “Congress of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry” and through the leadership of Dr. David J. Clark who had the vision to establish an official voice for dentists from around the world who have microscope-centered practices. The inaugural meeting brought together, and for the first time, seventy six (76) people from the USA Canada. And Mexico, representing general dentistry, the specialties of endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics, and dental laboratory technology under one roof to share their excitement and learn from one another the virtues of microscope enhanced dentistry.

The purpose of this organization is to achieve, by mutual study and cooperation, activities reflecting a high and ethical standard of practice as well as teaching and research in the art and science of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry.

The Academy had its origin in 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The men who deserve the credit for the concept and preliminary planning for the Academy were: Dr. David J. Clark and Dr. Glenn A. van As. Together, and after consultation with Dr. Gary Carr, endodontist, and Dr. James Belcher, Periodontist, they planned the Inaugural meeting of the Congress of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry as a multi discipline organization. That meeting took place at the Sun Burst Hotel on November 8-9, 2002, in Scottsdale, Arizona. At the end of the Scientific Session, a business meeting was conducted with all of the present members to elect officers for the new organization. Dr. David J. Clark was elected President, Dr. Glenn A. van As, Vice President, and Dr. Paul Piontkowski, Secretary/Treasurer. An informal organizational meeting was held the evening of November 7, 2002, which was followed by another organizational meeting the morning of November 10, 2002. President David Clark made several committee assignments, and the members attending the meeting formed an Interim Board of Directors: David J. Clark, President, Glenn A. van As, Vice President, Paul Piontkowski, Secretary/Treasurer, Assad F. Mora, John Stropko, Bill Gioia, Edwin J. Zimmet, Rick Schmidt, John Khademi Roger Forman, Randy Todd and James Belcher.

The following Board meeting was held at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday March 22, 2003, concurrent with the Hinnman Meeting.

Members of today have a proud heritage in the Academy. We continue to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of knowledge, truth, and competency in research, teaching, and in the clinical practice of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry.
